MEDIRAS

Membrane Distillation in Remote Areas

Duration: 2008 – 2011 ● Client: European Commission (FP7) ● WIP Role: Research and Innovation, Communication and Dissemination ● www.mediras.eu

Membrane distillation (MD) is a desalination technology mostly suitable for small distributed desalination systems powered by solar energy. The technology is very robust against different raw water and ambient conditions.

The MEDIRAS project is focused on the following four main objectives:

  • Reduction of water production costs by utilizing the potential for cost reduction of membrane distillation modules and system technology
  • Expansion of field for applications leading to an expanding market and decreasing production costs by serial production
  • Water quality management leading to a guarantee of the product water quality and ensuring that it complies with the highest drinking water standards
  • Financing concept for market introduction of MD- systems in regions with low purchasing power (developing countries and emerging nations)
