Duration: 2005 ● Client: GIZ ● WIP Role: Policy development

The report “Liquid Biofuels for Transportation in Tanzania” was commissioned by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) in order to investigate the possible opportunities of biofuels especially in developing countries. This report thereby contributed to a comprehensive global survey on “fluid bio-fuels for transportation” guided by the principle of sustainable agriculture, energy and transport.

The report was elaborated under the leadership of WIP Renewable Energies in cooperation with Integration Umwelt und Energie GmbH, Themba Technology Limited, and Tanzania Traditional Energy Development and Environment Organisation (TaTEDO).

The report provides an overview of the current situation in the field of biofuels for transportation in Tanzania including the description of the transport sector and the (bio) fuel market as well as the identification of most relevant agricultural energy crops and forestry resources for biofuel production. The potential for biofuels production in Tanzania is investigated in relation to sustainability targets including food security and energy provision as well as environmental, socio-economic, and macro-economic aspects. Finally, this report provides recommendations for decision-makers in Government and industry for the establishment of successful biofuels programmes in Tanzania.
