Pellets for Europe

Development and promotion of a transparent European Pellets Market

Duration: 2003 – 2005 ● Client: European Commission (IEE) ● WIP Role: Coordination, Market uptake, Communication and Dissemination ● www.pelletscentre.info

The project Pellets for Europe aimed to stimulate the European pellet market. Compacted biomass pellets are mainly produced from forestry residues in Northern Europe. This highly practical renewable fuel needs to be introduced into all European markets.

In Southern European areas where forestry residues are scarce, this means the development of a market for pelletised agricultural residues. The Pellets for Europe project focused on the following activities:

  • The stimulation of new wood pellet markets
  • The stimulation of new markets for pellets from agricultural residues
  • The integration and development of the European pellet market

To this end, WIP, in an international European consortium of 17 institutes and companies, undertook a wide range of market research and promotion activities in the framework of the Pellets for Europe project.

The project Pellets for Europe was co-funded by the EC Altener programme and ended in May 2005. Project activities were further developed in the framework of the project PELLETS@LAS supported by the Intelligent Energy Europe programme.
