About the Project
The GENDER4POWER project is a LIFE Programme co-funded initiative that started in November 2024 and will continue its efforts to alleviate energy poverty in targeted EU countries and beyond for the next four years.
The GENDER4POWER project aims to enhance living conditions and energy efficiency in buildings (and households) affected by energy poverty. It emphasizes a holistic gender-responsive, multi-stakeholder, and people-centred approach to renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions, aligning with EU strategies such as the Gender Equality Strategy and the Energy Efficiency Directive. GENDER4POWER aspires to demonstrate the potential of gender-responsive projects in meeting EU strategies. By incorporating gender mainstreaming and intersectionality and by involving citizens, the project aims to enhance public acceptance and community trust, bridge social networks, and ensure active participation of marginalized groups in decision-making processes.

About the Project
The GENDER4POWER project aims to enhance living conditions and energy efficiency in buildings (and households) affected by energy poverty. GENDER4POWER aspires to demonstrate the potential of gender-responsive projects in meeting EU strategies. By incorporating gender mainstreaming and intersectionality and by involving citizens, the project aims to enhance public acceptance and community trust, bridge social networks, and ensure active participation of marginalized groups in decision-making processes. GENDER4POWER will achieve its objectives through a set of 7 Work Packages, structured around 6 demonstration sites that aim to reduce energy vulnerability through renovation, specific energy efficiency measures and/or renewable energy production. The project emphasises capacity building and skills enhancement programs to ensure active participation and multi-stakeholder collaboration. It will also provide policy insights and recommendations for both national and European contexts, aiming to scale up and accelerate tested and established schemes. The project brings together 9 partners from six countries across Europe (Slovenia, Lithuania, Austria, Greece, Spain and Germany) with expertise in social sciences, citizen engagement, energy communities, gender equality, renewable energy use, renovation, and policy advocacy. This multidisciplinary expertise helps to implement a comprehensive, cross-cutting gender approach to selected energy poverty solutions, grounded in the needs and experiences of local citizens.
The project will develop comprehensive and intersectional approaches to promote social and gender justice in addressing energy poverty by creating tailored methodologies for the local, national and EU contexts. In addition, it will enhance shared understanding and awareness of energy poverty, energy efficiency, gender and social justice considerations to foster a sense of self-reliance and engagement in sustainable solutions. The project will carry out replicable, citizen-driven initiatives for renewable energy and renovation solutions that uplift the living standards of energy-poor households while simultaneously empowering communities. The consortium will collaboratively develop and widely disseminate a comprehensive set of practical gender-responsive recommendations derived from project insights and input from all stakeholders, with particular emphasis on the perspectives of those directly affected by energy poverty. Finally, inclusive and gender-responsive outreach plans will be developed to comprehensively support the dissemination, exploitation, and long-term sustainability of the project outcomes, thereby generating solid interest and promoting the scalability of the project to address energy poverty in the six demonstrators and beyond.
About Us
GENDER4POWER project brings together nine EU organisations from six countries with the common aim of alleviating energy poverty in Europe. Additionally, GENDER4POWER project will directly work with the people experiencing energy poverty through engaging with citizens or municipality led initiatives in six demonstrators (pilot locations) in these 6 countries across Europe.
Through the GENDER4POWER project, the consortium partners are combining their expertise in energy, social sciences, citizen engagement, energy communities, gender equality, productive use of renewable energy, small and deep renovations, and policy advocacy to implement a multidimensional and cross-cutting gender approach to selected energy poverty solutions.

Demonstrators
The GENDER4POWER project will work directly with people experiencing energy poverty through engaging with citizen or municipality-led initiatives in six 6 pilot locations (demonstrators) across Europe. This approach allows for the identification of community-specific energy needs and the development of tailored solutions that are more likely to be effective. It also allows citizens to empower their communities, create a sense of mutual understanding in tackling their own energy poverty, and learn from each other.

Events 28.01.2025 Consortium-Internal Gender Training in the GENDER4POWER Project
At the end of January B-NK and WECF held a gender training within the EU-LIFE financed GENDER4POWER project. The training provided an in-depth exploration of gender-related topics in the project's context. The goal was to raise awareness of gender justice and develop practical strategies to ensure a gender just implementation of the GENDER4POWER project. The training was led by B-NK and WECF, bringing in thorough knowledge on gender-relevant topics and hands-on training methods.
The training included interactive sessions covering an introduction to gender, intersectionality, and power structures, along with an analysis of gender dynamics and existing inequalities. Key component was the relation of gender with energy poverty, energy communities and the energy sector.
The picture is showing a training slide demonstrating the factors contributing to energy poverty which were discovered in a recent WECF study for the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).
While facts and figures on gender issues in the energy sector served as a foundation for discussions on existing barriers and potential solutions, practical exercises made it possible for the participants to reflect on gender-specific challenges in the energy sector and apply strategies for gender mainstreaming in projects. By presenting best practice examples and engaging in interactive group work, participants were encouraged to develop their own ideas and integrate them into their specific working packages of the GENDER4POWER project. Overall, this training can be seen as an important step to anchor gender as a cross-cutting issue within the consortium and implement effective measures for greater gender equality in the project.
